It’s back: Limburg’s largest train festival! The cozy family event for everyone interested in culture, steam, technology, and trains. During the Stoomtreindagen, take a unique behind-the-scenes look at the Miljoenenlijn and ride on our museum railway in one of the many trains.
Heritage in Motion
Museum station Simpelveld extends over approximately 800 meters and houses a large station building, the Miljoenenlijn Depot with the steam train workshop and turntable, the classic train safety system, and various children’s attractions. During the Stoomtreindagen, you will get up close and personal with our own museum equipment, various guest locomotives, the classic safety system, and the unique nature along the 29-kilometer-long railway. We don’t just show it; our volunteers let you experience it!
Guests of Stoomtreindagen 2023
During the Stoomtreindagen, various guest locomotives will be present. In the 2023 operating season, we were able to use the steam locomotive ‘Bonne’ from the ‘Hoogovens Stoom IJmuiden’ foundation. Additionally, on October 28 and 29, their second steam locomotive ‘Tom’ will also be present at the Simpelveld depot.
Our friends from the Historical Diesel Equipment Foundation are visiting with their yellow-gray loc 2205, and the men of the 2454-CREW are traveling to the Miljoenenlijn with their former Dutch Railways machine 2454.
The Museum Equipment Railion Foundation is coming to Simpelveld with the well-known brown NS loc 2225, and the Karel Foundation (which supports charities like KWF Cancer Research) is showcasing their train set 366 ‘De Karel’ to the visitors.
On Saturday, October 28, we will also receive a visit from the Steam Society, who will travel from Rotterdam to the south of our country with the 01 1075 and 23 023 – the largest steam locomotives in the Netherlands (with wheels of up to 2 meters!).
Of course, our own locomotives are not missing: in addition to the previously mentioned steam locomotive Bonne, our Swedish steam loc E2 1040 and the VT98 railbus from Germany will be used in the timetable. In addition, various shunting diesel locomotives will run on the yard, and a special freight train will run on the Miljoenenlijn. Want to experience what it’s like to be a train engineer? Ride in the cab of the diesel locomotive ‘Sik’!
There’s more to experience
Multiple locomotives under steam, a bouncy castle, various children’s games, train parade, workshop demonstrations, a unique look at the large-scale revision project of steam locomotive 52 532, a freight train with various restored wagons on the Miljoenenlijn, an LGB garden railway in action, a tour on a large model layout, and much more!
